elspeth's ephemeral musings

Fire bad, tree pretty!
Quarter Square (Wild Times, #1) - David Bridger This was a fun book, made me think of Charles De Lint a little bit, though not as poetic. Oh, and more sex.:p
Mark and Tony (Men of Smithfield #1) - L.B. Gregg This was cute, a very fluffy read for when you are feeling meh.

Bolt-hole

Bolt-Hole - Amy Lane I usually love Amy Lane, but this book didn't do it for me.
Change of Heart - Mary Calmes I really enjoyed this book all the way up to the "you are mine" shit.Yeah that killed it for me.
Mr. Plum - Sue Brown This was kind of a hot mess, most of it didn't click with me.The little bit of sentimental in the end made me smile though.
Desert Stormed - James Brock Wow.Like magic everything is made all better in the end.

Tumbling Blindly

Tumbling Blindly - Sue Brown Gah!I really do not like the main character.I didn't feel the chemistry, at all.Yup, I am done.
Skip Beat!, Vol. 33 - Yoshiki Nakamura Why, why do you play with me like this!I don't think my heart can take this!Stupid cliffhangers.
Analyzing Emory - Lily Grace meh.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1)

Magic Bites - Ilona Andrews I enjoyed this, the world building was rich, the characters well fleshed out, and the story compelling with mystery, suspense, and dash of romance.

Geekomancy

Geekomancy - Michael R. Underwood Yeah, I am not feeling the warm fuzzies for Eastwood. Go die in a fire, you deserve it.
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Niki Slobodian, #1) - J.L. Murray I am not feeling this.
Wolf in Shadow - John Lambshead I couldn't get into this, it opens up with a lot of telling not showing. The writing style is too blunt, and a lot of info dumping.I will not be reading this, it's not my cup of tea.I got this off Netgalley.
Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) - Kevin Hearne Love, love, loved!
Charming (Pax Arcana, #1) - Elliott James I liked this book more than I thought I was going too. Especially when I could see that the author was pushing the main character into a relationship with a woman that was already seeing somebody. I am guessing the reasons that this didn’t bother me too much is the fact that the man she was seeing was a complete douche canoe. Oh, and not in just everyday standards, he is a manipulative evil bastard. The other reason that it didn’t bother me too much was the fact that the main character was up front and honest to both parties of his attraction, and that he wasn’t going to act on them until he got his own shit straightened out. So the background romance was interesting and not the angsty moon eyed crap that is in a lot of books since Twilight. I really enjoyed John’s blunt honesty through the story, how he didn’t hold back his thoughts to spare others feeling. He explained why he was the way he was, why he didn’t the things he does with hardly any apologies for them. This is not to say that he didn’t apologize for his fuck ups, he is very up front with these as well. I didn’t like how quick John trusted Sig and her Scoobies, especially when two of them proved themselves to be untrustworthy. For somebody that has been protecting himself for so long, with as many enemies that he has this didn’t make much sense. So I am curious about book two in this series, I want see where the author goes with the story. On a complete random none I also want to say that each character was not unlike a character from Scooby Doo? I wonder if this was intentional or just tropes in play. We had Sig/Daphne the hawt girl that everybody wants, Molly/Velma the nerdy girl in glasses, Choo/Shaggy the stoner, John/Fred/Scooby the hawt alpha male with canine abilities.
The Exodus Towers (Dire Earth Cycle, #2) - Jason M. Hough I got this title from NetGalley for a honest review. This review contains spoilers. What to say about this book? It wasn’t totally boring, it had its good parts, but the middle dragged. It happens with me sometimes in bridge books, where the story stalls, and I get bored. I have a bad habit when this happens of wandering off to read something bright, shiny, and new. I am fickle like that.So here is the story, I was thoroughly, and emotionally involved until about forty percent. I really liked the Gabriel arc, meeting new immunes, and seeing the depths of horror a mad man will go. The story build up to this point was exciting, and raw, with wild immunes, Skylar cut off from the camp, and Tania still shook up from the choices she had to make, and the death of her lifelong friend and mentor. Then Tania and Skylar have a spat, and things just slow down to a crawl. The story then focuses more on Darwin, and what Russell’s (may he be punted out a air lock) choices have done to the power structure surrounding the Elevator. In putting Grillo in charge of Darwin, Russell gave the Jacobites a foothold to power. Also I want to add I am not really feeling the love triangle that is going on in this book. The fight between Skyler and Tania feels juvenile, and the relationship between Skyler and Ana just isn’t.I don’t think Ana is long for this world, just saying. So, I didn’t really snap back into the book until close to the ending where the author gifts us with a HUGE cliffhanger.
